Night Sky Explorer - 2008
Introductory Astronomy Course - Canopus Hill Observatory

The Astronomical Society of Tasmania held an Introductory Astronomy Course in March 2008 and will be inviting anyone interested in observing the southern night skies to attend a second course later in the year.  It will be held near Hobart, over two evenings at a date to be announced.

The course will be suitable for people who are interested in finding out about the many varied astronomical objects and patterns of stars to be seen on a clear night from Tasmania. It will teach you how to observe with both the naked eye and binoculars and provide the basic information to allow participants to recognize and observe star constellations, aurorae, planets, meteor showers and other transient phenomena such as eclipses and comets.  Information on both the use
and purchase of telescopes is included.

No prior knowledge will be required for course participants – just an interest in the night sky and a desire to join others for 2 interesting and (hopefully) fun evenings in an informal learning experience.

There will be several experienced amateur astronomers present during both evenings who have presented many astronomy courses and conducted numerous viewing sessions for the general public and educational bodies.

The nightly sessions will focus on observing and discussion in roughly equal proportions although observing may be curtailed if weather conditions are unfavourable. If we are unable to observe the sky because of clouds then videos, slides and computer presentations will be given.

Further details will be posted when the dates have been set.

The cost of the course is $40.00 per participant. This will cover course materials, handouts and light refreshments on both evenings, and for an additional $35 we are offering 12 months membership of the Society.
